Children's Council of San Francisco is a nonprofit child care referral agency that works with parents, child care providers, and community members to improve access to child care and early education. Founded in the 1970s by a grassroots collective of parents, the organization had grown to over 100 permanent employees by the time I came aboard in 2007. It fell to the small but dedicated Communications Department to further the organization's mission through a multifaceted approach that involved parents, child care providers, child care advocates, and the staff itself.
As Communications Assistant, I managed all website content (including overseeing a complete website redesign), produced a monthly internal newsletter, and contributed to a printed quarterly newsletter with a circulation of over 10K. I worked with the organization's public policy department to launch a succinct quarterly newsletter focused entirely on child care advocacy efforts and related policy, interviewing such figures as City Supervisors Fiona Ma and Bevin Dufty, as well as Senator Mark Leno.
